Healthier Scotland - Women and Alcohol

DRINKING MORE THAN THREE GLASSES OF WINE A DAY COULD INCREASE YOUR RISK OF DEVELOPING BREAST CANCER //

Three glasses counts as 5 units, so at 8gms of alcohol per unit it adds up to approx 35-44gms per day. A large-scale study, which involved 58,000 breast cancer patients and 95,000 other women, has confirmed the link between alcohol consumption and the risk of developing breast cancer. In fact, as many as 500 new cases of breast cancer each year could be directly caused by drink. And according to the world’s largest study of women’s drinking behaviour, your risk of breast cancer increases by 6% for every extra alcoholic drink you drink every day. No-one yet knows exactly why alcohol has this effect, but one of the reasons is that alcohol is more concentrated in your bloodstream than a man’s, travelling around your body in a more toxic way. When you drink too much, you could be damaging your health.
