At Work

Most of us spend a lot of our time in the workplace. Just one small office can emit three to five tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. So, while it's great to live an environmentally-friendly lifestyle at home, you can also make a worthwhile impact on our environment by working in a sustainable way.

Because the majority of us work for other people, we often feel that there's little we can do to make a difference. But there are a range of simple changes you can make to your daily routine at work that would make a difference, and don't forget many of the things you do at home can also be done at work.

For example, you may be able to change how you travel to work. Some larger employers have even developed travel plans offering advice to staff on more sustainable travel methods, particularly alternatives to single-occupancy car use. Perhaps you can car share or use public transport? If you travel on business, the train is often a good alternative to the car, and allows you to work or relax while on the move. Or, if it's not too far, why not just walk or cycle, helping your health and the environment?

If you travel on business and have to stay overnight, try to choose accommodation that makes an effort to reduce its environmental impact. The Green Tourism Business Scheme for example, is accredited by VisitScotland and includes businesses which offer a high quality of service as well as having good environmental credentials.
