Molecular Geneticist
Clinical Molecular Geneticists use biochemical and molecular biology techniques to identify genetic abnormalities associated with disease. This is usually prenatal diagnosis and is important in identifying carriers or pre-symptomatic individuals at risk.
The majority of the Molecular Geneticist's work revolves around four main areas:
- confirmation of diagnosis of genetic disorders;
- pre-symptomatic testing and diagnosis for individuals and families at risk of single gene disorders;
- prenatal diagnosis for families with a known single gene disorder;
- calculating the risk of an individual or couple parenting a child with a particular condition.
Entry Requirements
The requirements include a first or second-class honours degree in genetics, or a related discipline with a strong genetics component.
For entry to a degree course in Genetics or Biological Science the usual requirement is three/four Highers (A-C) plus Standard Grades (1-3) in one/two other subjects. The Highers should include two Science subjects.
However, entry requirements vary between courses and alternative qualifications may be accepted – check individual university prospectuses for details.
Training
Applicants will enter the science career path at Grade A (Trainee grade). For Molecular Geneticists this involves a 2-year in-service training course, which leads to the Clinical Molecular Genetics Society's Certificate of Competence.
Career Prospects
When the Grade A training is completed you will be eligible for mandatory registration. Scientists who have completed Grade A training are eligible to compete for vacancies at Grade B, the main professional grade.
Progress through Grade B posts is not automatic and salary will be linked to the job description.
Heads of Department and deputies in larger laboratories are employed at Grade C, which is equivalent to medical consultant staff.
