Practitioners and Carers
For care service providers, registration with the Care Commission certifies your service to provide care for vulnerable individuals.
Providers
For care service providers, registration with the Care Commission certifies your service to provide care for vulnerable individuals.
To successfully register (and stay registered) with the Care Commission, your service must continuously meet the requirements of:
- Section 29 of the Regulation of Care (Scotland) Act 2001;
- The National Care Standards; and
- Any other legislation relevant to that service.
A registration guide has been produced to help:
- People wishing to provide a care service for the first time; and
- Providers of current registered services wishing to make a change to their existing service.
The guide gives information about the registration process, and the requirements and expectations we have about the provision of care services.
The guide is currently being updated, but you can get an existing copy from your local Care Commission office.
The registration process
There are four stages in the pre-application process.
- Initial enquiry and guidance.
- Consultation between the provider and a Care Commission Officer.
- Review plans / scaled drawings to make sure that accommodation/premises meet regulations and take account of the National Care Standards.
- Site visit to assess the design of the building, safety features, equipment and facilities available together with health and safety features.
This process needs to take place before completing a registration application form.
How to apply
After the consultation meeting and site visit (where applicable) have taken place, a Care Commission Officer will provide you with an application form.
Applications to register can only be made using this Care Commission application form, which is divided into six sections:
- Applicant's details.
- Type of care service.
- Staffing.
- Operations of the care service.
- Accommodation / premises.
- Fit person process.
Guidance notes [PDF - 190KB] are available to help applicants through each section of the application form, and provide an explanation as to why the information is requested, including references to legislation, regulation and orders.
All applicants must produce a statement of function and purpose in support of the application. You might find this document, Childminding - a guide to registration, helpful.
All details requested at the time of registration are in accordance with The Regulation of Care (Applications and provisions of advice) Order 2002.
Successful registration!
When registration is granted, a certificate of registration detailing the conditions of registration will be sent to you. The certificate must be displayed in full view so that all carers and users can read it.
