Scottish Government - sustainable development

A Greener Scotland is one of this Government's five strategic objectives. A Greener Scotland means improving Scotland's natural and built environment and the sustainable use and enjoyment of it.

Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA)

SEPA is Scotland's environmental regulator, responsible to Scottish Ministers. As well as its role in controlling pollution, it works with others to protect and improve our environment.

SEPA also has flood warning responsibilities, operating a 24-hour Floodline information service (0845 988 1188) and works closely with other organisations to manage flood risk in Scotland.

Scottish Natural Heritage

Scottish Natural Heritage's task is to secure the conservation and enhancement of Scotland's unique and precious natural heritage - the wildlife, the habitats and the landscapes that have evolved in Scotland through the long partnership between people and nature.

SNH work also includes Access, Education, Landscape, Casework, Renewables and Greenspace.

Forestry Commission Scotland

The mission of Forestry Commission Scotland is to protect and expand Scotland's forests and woodlands and to increase their value to society and the environment.

This website contains information on visiting forests, education and strategy.

Historic Scotland

Historic Scotland is an executive agency of the Scottish Government and is charged with safeguarding the nation's historic environment.

The website gives information on places to visit under the control of the trust and how to access learning materials and educational opportunities.

Food Standards Agency

The Food Standards Agency provides advice and information to the public and Government on food safety and standards in Scotland. It also protects consumers through effective food enforcement and monitoring.

Sustainable Scotland Network (SSN)

SSN is a network of sustainable development officers and advocates from Scottish local authorities.

At the network's core is a small development team, funded by the Scottish Government, and hosted by Keep Scotland Beautiful. SSN has active members from each of the 32 local authorities in Scotland.

Scottish Sustainable Development Forum (SSDF)

The SSDF is the focus for thinking and action on sustainable development across Scotland.

The website contains the SSDF Online Library which provides quick and easy access to key publications and evidence for policy formers, decision makers and other professionals and individuals.

Sustainable Development Commission in Scotland (SDC)

The SDC are the Scottish Government's independent advisory body on sustainable development.

Commissioners and secretariat work with Scottish Government departments and agencies to promote sustainable development.

They also work with a vast range of other organisations, such as the Scottish Sustainable Development Forum and the Sustainable Scotland Network.

Scottish Environment LINK

Scottish Environment LINK provides a forum and network for its member organisations, enabling informed debate, and assisting co-operation within the voluntary environmental sector.

LINK is an umbrella body for environmental NGOs - links to their websites are available from this site.

Forward Scotland

Forward Scotland carries out its work through a range of development projects and grant schemes, supported by information exchange.

Through the design and delivery of grant schemes they help communities across Scotland improve their local environment and achieve a better and more sustainable quality of life.

UK Government sustainable development site

The Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) is situated within the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

SDU works to embed, monitor and report on sustainable development across Whitehall and the UK.

Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA)

Is a not for profit membership organisation established to promote best practice standards in environmental management, auditing and assessment.

The Institute offers ongoing support to environmental professionals and aims to promote sustainability through improved environmental practice and performance.

Architecture and Design Scotland

Architecture and Design Scotland is Scotland's national champion for good architecture, design and planning in the built environment.

They act as a key delivery mechanism for the objectives of the Scottish Government's Policy on Architecture for Scotland.

Centre for Human Ecology

The Centre for Human Ecology is a network for ecological and social transformation.

They offer challenging courses for people who want to "be the change" help organisations pursue greener, more ethical practices, and work towards tackling the root causes of global issues.
