Go Greener and start making compost

Despite all our best efforts to reduce food waste we will still be left wondering what to do with the eggshells, banana peels and coffee grounds. The best way to make organic food waste work for you is to set up a compost bin.

Even if you only have a small garden, compost can be used to help in patio containers and herb pots.

How to set up a compost bin:

Decide which type of compost bin is best for you

A wide range of compost bins are available from Waste Aware Scotland from as little as £6. Their Compost at Home campaign is supported by the Scottish Government that means that you can buy a range of compost bins at reduced prices.

Find a place for your compost

Place your compost bin on either bare soil or grass. This will allow helpful worms and other creatures get into your bin and help breakdown your kitchen and garden waste. Choose a location for your compost bin that is easy to get to all year round making it easier for you to add new materials.

Start composting your organic waste

Make sure you know what makes good compost.

Once your compost has matured (depending on your mix this can take from 6 to 18 months.) start using around your garden.
