It’s hard to believe, but you lot are wasting over £1 billion worth of food every year. I thought Scots were supposed to be careful with money but every year you’re throwing out an average of £430 for each household. For families with children it’s even more – an average of £550 a year!
And it’s not just a waste of money and good food – it’s also bad for me. Around 570,000 tonnes of food waste is thrown out by Scottish households each year, and most of it is sent to landfill where it emits harmful greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. If we stopped wasting all that food we could save the associated greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking 1 in 4 cars off the road.
Wouldn’t it be better to save all that money and prevent those emissions in the first place by only buying what you’re actually going to use? By shopping more carefully, getting smarter on food preparation and storage you could make a big difference to your pockets, not to mention my indigestion
