Alcohol Sponsorship Guidelines

The alcohol sponsorship guidelines have been drawn up by the Scottish Government & Alcohol Industry Partnership. The nationwide code – agreed by distillers, brewers, and retailers – is part of the industry’s continuing commitment to play a leading role in tackling alcohol misuse, whilst at the same time continuing to support international and community events and projects. Recognising the important contribution of drinks companies to the Scottish economy and civic life through local and national sponsorship activities, the new guidelines identify best practice for alcohol brand sponsorships in Scotland. The guidelines include commitments to:

  • Include activities or events to promote responsible drinking in any new commercial sponsorship
  • Ensure alcohol brands are not used to sponsor teams, brands, celebrities or events with particular appeal to under 18s, nor sponsor individuals under 18
  • Carry responsible drinking messages on all point of sale communications
  • Conduct sampling activities at sponsored events in a responsible manner

Model workplace alcohol policy

A growing number of companies now have stated policies on alcohol. Having clear rules on what should happen if someone is found to have a problem with alcohol benefits both employers and employees.

The Scottish Government & Alcohol Industry Partnership, in conjunction with the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives, has developed this model alcohol policy. It takes best practice from a wide variety of organisations to offer a flexible workplace alcohol policy that any organisation, regardless of size or nature of business can adapt to suit their own needs. It is suitable both for companies who have no alcohol policy or those who want to update and improve their current one. It is supported by Alcohol Focus Scotland, the STUC and CBI.
